The Future of Economic Integration in a Fragmenting World
IMF SEMINAR EVENT
DATE: April 17, 2026
DAY: Friday
02:00 PM - 03:00 PM
LOCATION: HQ1 Atrium, HQ1-1-700
Overview
Economic integration has significantly increased in recent decades, powering growth by expanding scale, competition, and innovation. Yet, underlying distortions and market failures have created supply chain risks, energy vulnerabilities, and imbalanced growth. Increasing geoeconomic fragmentation, rising trade tensions, industrial policies, and shifting supply chains are now redrawing the map, creating new risks and opportunities—especially for emerging markets deeply linked to global networks. Countries now face a defining challenge: how to seize the gains of integration while protecting themselves from more frequent shocks and vulnerabilities. The war in the Middle East has further sharpened the focus on these trade‑offs. This high‑level seminar convenes policymakers from around the world to unpack these tradeoffs and explore practical strategies to strengthen growth, resilience, and stability in an increasingly complex global economy.
