Overview

While the world works to defeat the pandemic, countries should not lose sight of the threat of climate change. A green recovery is urgent, including by getting energy prices right and using green public investment to ensure that countries build forward better.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva will moderate a distinguished panel of ministers of finance from around the world to explore the fiscal policies necessary to foster countries’ abilities to mitigate and adapt to climate change, leveraging the recovery from the COVID-19 crisis to accelerate action.

Panelists

Panelist: Kristalina Georgieva

Kristalina Georgieva is the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). She is the first person from an emerging market economy to lead the IMF since its inception in 1944. Before joining the Fund, Ms. Georgieva was Chief Executive Officer of the World Bank and also served as Interim President for a time. Previously, she served at the European Commission as Vice President for Budget and Human Resources – and as Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response. She was named “European of the Year” and “Commissioner of the Year” by European Voice for her leadership in the European Union’s humanitarian response to crises.

Panelist: Zainab Ahmed

Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed. Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning of Nigeria since August 2019. Since taking her current office, Ms. Ahmed has advanced fiscal reforms including the enactment of the 2020 Finance Bill—which included a controversial increase in the VAT rate and removal of fuel subsidies. Her leadership was key to the authorities’ timely request to the Fund for emergency financing.

Panelist: Nigel Clarke

Nigel Clarke. The Hon. Nigel Clarke, DPhil., MP has served as Jamaica’s Minister of Finance and the Public Service since March 2018. He has also previously served as a Senator in the Jamaican Parliament and a Director of the Bank of Jamaica.

Panelist: Daniele Franco

Daniele Franco: Prior to his appointment as Italy’s Minister of Economy and Finance in February 2021, he served as Senior Deputy Governor at the Bank of Italy (BdI). He joined the BdI in 1979 and spent much of his career there. During 1994–97, he was an economic advisor in DG ECFIN and during 2013–19 he headed Italy’s State General Accounting Office. Throughout his career he has focused on public finance issues and has published numerous books and articles on the subject. 

Panelist: Sri Mulyani Indrawati

Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Finance Minister of Indonesia

Sri Mulyani Indrawati has served as Finance Minister of Indonesia since 2016. She served in the same post from 2005 to 2010. From 2010–2016, she served as the Managing Director of the World Bank Group. From 2002–2004, she was an Executive Director at the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund, representing 12 economies in Southeast Asia. She has been honored globally with awards such as the World's Best Minister at the World Government Summit in 2018 and the Distinguished Leadership and Service Award from The Institute of International Finance in 2021. In December 2023, the Australian National University awarded her an honorary Doctor of Laws, recognizing her substantial impact on economic development at both the national and international levels. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Indonesia in 1986, she advanced her studies in the United States at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1992, earning a Master of Science in Policy Economics in 1990 and a Ph.D. in Economics in 1992.
